NORTH VANCOUVER—When CUPE 389 members at Delbrook Community Centre started composting waste from their small staff kitchen and one public kitchen last August, not only did they divert over 1000 pounds of waste from the landfill, the compost was used to grow vegetables that helped feed the hungry.

Union welcomes mediation

QUESNEL–CUPE 1050, Quesnel municipal workers, are pleased that the City has agreed to engage the services of a mediator. The union applied for mediation on Wednesday to the Labour Relations Board and the employer has accepted.

“This is a positive step forward,” says CUPE 1050 president Dan Weiman. “We are looking forward to getting back to the table.”

Members of CUPE 1050 met on Sunday afternoon and voted to renew their strike mandate that expires at the end of August.

Recall BC Legislature now, put HST before MLAs for free vote says CUPE BC

BURNABY—Today’s ruling by BC Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman that the anti-HST initiative petition and accompanying legislation are legal clears the way for Premier Gordon Campbell and the BC Liberal government to respect the wishes of British Columbians and recall the Legislature for a free vote on the HST, CUPE BC President Barry O’Neill said today.

“This campaign was able to do what almost no one thought possible, and the chief justice recognized the magnitude of that accomplishment in his ruling,” said O’Neill.

CUPE members ask City to get back to the table

QUESNEL–CUPE 1050 members turned down the City of Quesnel’s final offer with a resounding ‘no’ vote. The Labour Relations Board announced the result of the vote this afternoon.

“Municipal workers turned down the initial offer and instead of being willing to negotiate and work things out, the City forced a vote on the exact same contract that had been rejected,” said CUPE 1050 acting president Curtis Galbraith.

The City’s final offer was for zero per cent in the first year, one per cent in year two, and two per cent in the final year of the three-year contract.
