With 85 constituencies throughout the province, CUPE activists have been deployed in each region to help mobilize the union’s 85,000 members well in advance of the May 14th, 2013 BC Election.
Before the holidays, CUPE zone coordinators met for two day-long training sessions on getting out the vote and motivating members. In the coming months, coordinators will meet with local executives, attend membership meetings, connect candidates with locals, secure phone banks, and engage in member-to-member calling.
“We are going to talk to members directly, that is best way to get out the vote,” says Political Action Committee Co-Chair Paul Faoro. “CUPE members can make the difference in what could be an historic election for working people in BC.”
The first step in the campaign is a voter registration drive. Elections BC makes voter registration very easy. Click here to make sure you are registered to vote in the May 14, 2013 BC Election.
In order to vote you must be a Canadian Citizen, have lived in BC for at least six months, and are over the age of 18. For more information on voting in BC visit www.elections.bc.ca or call 1-800-661-8683.
If you are registered and always vote, talk to your coworkers and friends and encourage them to participate in our democratic process. It’s an important part of keeping our communities strong.
Voting connects us. As neighbours, friends, coworkers and citizens. It reminds us that this is our government, and elected officials work for all of us.
In the last provincial election, more than half of eligible voters stayed home. That’s why it’s crucial CUPE members participate in political action.
